Jerry Rockwell - Mid-Week Coffee Break

Our guest in the Mid-Week Coffee Break Podcast is singer/songwriter, Jerry Rockwell.

Jerry Rockwell is one of a handful of folk musicians who,  since about
1970, have been national and international advocates for the  mountain dulcimer.
He is an accomplished player, teacher, and custom  builder of this
American folk instrument.  Jerry specializes in the gentle,  soothing, and hypnotic
sounds of Celtic airs, waltzes, and folk tunes, and is  committed to
helping his students explore the dulcimer in the deepest and  fullest way
possible.  He lives and works in the Appalachian foothills of  southeast Ohio, and
regularly teaches mountain dulcimer at workshops across the  country.  In
July of 2007, he performed, taught, and lectured at a folk  festival in
Siglufjord, Iceland.

The Burns Sisters - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

This week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast we explore creativity from an Irish-American perspective with Annie and Marie Burns. Having toured the country as back up singers with the likes of Arlo Guthrie and Jimmy LaFave, the Burns Sisters have released 6 albums of their own. I was unable to be there for the interview, so our Chief Community Builder, Katie Mitchell sat in..

We’ve been enjoying the Burns Sisters performances and harmonies at the Woody Guthrie Festival for five years now, and we finally got a chance to visit with them. It was really neat to hear the stories of their upbringing in New York state, and learn about how they explored their Irish roots.

Buffy Sainte-Marie - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Welcome to the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast, formerly known as The Standing "O" Project Singer/Songwriter Podcast.

Our guest this week is the legendary Canadian-American folk singer, educator and activist, Buffy Sainte-Marie. Although Buffy’s music today is far from traditional folk, it embodies the anti-war and native rights sentiments that were prevalent in the sixties. Her music was blacklisted by the FBI during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. Despite the setback, she persevered with her music and teaching, and found a new venue, the children’s TV show, Sesame Street. In 1997 Buffy Sainte-Marie founded the Cradleboard Teaching Project, an educational curriculum devoted to better understanding Native Americans. She has won recognition and numerous awards for both her music and her work in education and social activism. We spoke with Buffy about the release of her CD, Power in the Blood.

Trinity Demask - Mid-Week Coffee Break Podcast

Our guest in the Mid-Week Coffee Break Podcast is Colorado singer/songwriter, Trinity Demask.

The first thing that grabs you about Trinity Demask is her voice. Often drawing comparisons to the angelic, rootsy tones of Alison Krauss, Trinity's voice can also pack a powerhouse punch reminiscent of blues rocker Susan Tedeschi. It is a voice perfectly suited to bring songs to life with heart and passion.

Trinity honed that voice singing to her pets as a child and alone in her car as an adult, but when it came to singing to a human audience, fear of rejection kept her silent. "By the time I made my singing debut, I was in my thirties. I had always written poetry and stories, so songwriting wasn't so much of a surprise, but my friends and family were shocked to learn that I had this voice that I'd been keeping secret. I've since discovered it's not uncommon for people, especially women who tend to nurture others and put their own desires last, to have shelved talents or dreams. Finally, they reach a point in their mid-thirties or later when they ask themselves, 'if not now, when?'"
