Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Mid-Week Coffee Break is Kansas City-based singer/songwriter Wyatt Brewer, who will be releasing his new EP "Factory Made", December 10.

Wyatt Brewer started at age 4 helping my dad in his home 4-Track studio. Helping unplug wires and making the intricate spaghetti work on older modeled equipment, paved the way to doing the same things on digital equipment in our new digital age. Wyatt learned guitar from my dad at age 10 in the year 2000. He performed in talent shows through middle and high school, and found enjoyment in writing his own songs at age 14. He has had a couple song placements in advertising, but most of his love is in finding new ways to tell the same stories we have always known: Love, pain, death, and rebirth. December 10th will be his first official release. It is an EP titled, "Factory Made."

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Mid-Week Coffee Break is Colorado-based singer/songwriter Mary Beth Cross, whose most recent EP 'Feels Like Home' is currently under consideration for Four Grammys.

MARY BETH CROSS is an award winning singer, songwriter and musician. Her music is a soulful, intimate acoustic mix of original and classic tunes. Her new EP titled "Feels Like Home" incorporates traditional Bluegrass instruments into her arrangements. Mary Beth's originals are inspired by the stories of her family, the forests and farms of her Wisconsin upbringing, and Colorado, where she makes her home.

FEELS LIKE HOME by Mary Beth Cross begins by welcoming you in from the rain to the warmth of the hearth with the Paul Simon classic "Kathy's Song". Before you know it, the rugs are rolled up and a dance floor is cleared. Mary Beth takes listeners to her grand- parents’ dairy farm back in the 1940s with "Threshing Time", a tune she co-wrote with her 85- year-old father. Airing fears, worry, and concern is still a part of family gatherings. The burdens are shared and then released with Gary White's "Long, Long Time". Mary Beth takes the Linda Ronstadt cover and places it in a bluegrass arrangement, giving it new breath. She then leads you slowly into the wee hours of the evening (to the bedroom) with "The Medley", and concludes with an original ditty welcoming the morning and the gift of a new day with "Cottonwood Creek".

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Mid-Week Coffee Break is Elizabeth Hareza.

Elizabeth is raw, honest, hilariously quirky and out for the greater good.  Spreading love and music is her passion and she does that through sharing stories about her real life, experiences of others (anonomyously of course) and a few tall tales here and there.  She is based in Park City, UT but travels regularly to performances.  If you would like to hear her play in your town, I’m sure she will find a way to make it work. “In elementary school, a teacher told me that I would never have as much talent in my entire body as Bobby Mcferrin has in his pinky finger.” She says. “At first, I chose to believe it.  It took many years and a killer HBO documentary on Bobby Mcferrin for me to realize that she was wrong.  I don’t want anyone else to be made feel like they cannot accomplish their dreams.  The most beautiful thing about music is that there are so many different kinds to choose from.  If you are true to yourself and sing about what you believe in, you can move mountains.” Says Hareza. After a childhood of feeling misunderstood and the untimely death of her father, Elizabeth has found herself grateful that “different” is the new “cool”.  She runs a bi-monthly songwriting group in Park City where she brings community members and passers by together to share their love of music and writing.  Her groups include everyone from professional songwriters to people who have never even written a song.  “It is meant to be a safe space where anyone can come, feel welcome and encouraged, meet new friends and share some love.  We ask people to leave their ego’s at home and I’m not afraid to ask someone to not return if they have anything but the utmost respect for everyone else in the room.” She says. “It’s about spreading love and good vibes, not telling people about your superior level of awesomeness.  If you are at one of our songwriter groups we already assume that you are, so there is no need to boast.” She says with a grin. Elizabeth could not be more grateful for the opportunity to share her music with a community like the Standing O Project.  She would love to hear from you, so please send her a note!

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Mid-Week Coffee Break is Rain Perry.

Rain Perry is an award-winning songwriter. Her song “Beautiful Tree” was the theme for the CW Network’s Life Unexpected, a criminally cancelled series on which she also had the surreal pleasure of playing herself alongside Ben Lee and Sarah McLachlan.

In addition to releasing four albums on her own Precipitous Records, Rain is the author of the autobiographical play Cinderblock Bookshelves: A Guide for Children of Fame-Obsessed Bohemian Nomads.

She is the Grand Prize winner of both the John Lennon Song Contest (Folk Division) and the ROCKRGRL Discoveries competition, as well as a Telluride Troubadour finalist. She divides her time between motherhood and the lucrative world of independent folk-rock music.

Rain has received many nice reviews (and one really snarky one), but her favorites are those Google-translated from Dutch: “The album Cinderblock Bookshelves is not the melancholic childbirth that you would expect…Rainy Perry is a veritable asset to the music world!” – Kindamusik

Rain also recently directed The Shopkeeper (discussed in this interview) on Mark Hallman of Congress House Studio. View the preview here: https://vimeo.com/165494197 and check out full details, including premier dates here: http://www.shopkeepermovie.com

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Mid-Week Coffee Break is Tom Freund.

“If you want to hear what California feels like, Tom Freund’s new album is a good place to start...” – Acoustic Guitar

It’s the ease with which he delivers conversational lyrics and honeyed melodies, a natural magic that is the soul of Tom Freund’s music. Though he’s widely-traveled in a variety of genres-- from hearftelt folk to buoyant pop to boho jazz to straightforward rock ’n’ roll, and beyond --Freund is, simply put, a singer-songwriter with a defined and captivating presence.

Freund's latest disc "Two Moons" on Surf Road Records draws roots sources for an urbane Americana sound, melding nostalgia with a raw and sharp-eyed views of life today. “If Two Moons, with its underlying message of hope in this messy world of ours, serves as an inspiring, encouraging soundtrack for listeners, then I can say to myself, ‘ok, you’re doing something right for the people out there”, Freund says. He delivers this CD’s main message in the standout track “Lemme Be Who I Wanna Be,” in which he declares: “I’m basically hooked on this life/it’s got a lot of problems/but it treats me real right/and you don’t have to agree with me/but let me fly my freak flag.” This oddly upbeat anthem of personal empowerment so impressed Canadian rock star Serena Ryder that she asked to sing on it. The opening track “Angel Eyes,” featuring vocals by Ben Harper, serves as Freund’s take on Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” motif, expresses his appreciation to his Southern California friends for always having his back. Notes of nostalgia play into Tom’s self-declared favorite track “Mind of Your Own” which delves into a deeply personal memory of the New York native’s childhood home.

Freund spent the mid-’90s touring with the indie rock cult faves THE SILOS and has been releasing solo albums since 1998. Tom has alternated between recording and touring behind his own discs, playing upright bass, electric bass guitar, and mandolin with the likes of British pub-rock great Graham Parker (who hailed Freund as one of the best singer-songwriters operating today), pop star Mandy Moore, groove-soul sensation Brett Dennen, Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Jackson Browne, and three-time Grammy winner Ben Harper. “What really brought me to wanting to work with Tom in the studio is his songs,” Harper concludes. “It doesn’t have to even go any further than that. As far as I’m concerned, who wouldn’t wanna work with him in the studio? Because the songs are there.”

More recently, you can spot Freund playing with Parker in the Judd Apatow film, "This Is 40" and featured on the hit TV show “Parenthood” and the upcoming Pamela Adlon show “Better Things”. He continues to tour North America, Europe and Japan playing with his band or doing solo shows.

Our guest on the Mid-Week Coffee Break is Terry Kitchen.

Terry Kitchen's songs are portraits of ordinary people and emotions, captured with extraordinary compassion, honesty and humor. He has released ten CDs of original contemporary folk music since the 1990s, and his songs have won the Mid-Atlantic and USA Song Contests and been runner-up in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. His latest CD, 2015's The Post-American Century, reached #19 on the national Folk-DJ airplay chart. His 2013 novel Next Big Thing, based on his experiences with his '80s band Loose Ties, was called "a great debut novel" by the San Francisco Book Review. Terry Kitchen grew up in Easton, PA on the music of the 1960s before moving to small town Ohio in the '70s. He attended Occidental College in LA (with Barack Obama), then moved to Boston where he played in the '80s rock band Loose Ties before deciding folk music was the most natural setting for his distinctive narrative songwriting. For the past twenty-five years he has performed on the New England and national folk scenes at clubs and coffeehouses including Club Passim and The Nameless Coffeehouse in Mass., The Rockland Music Hall, Postcrypt Coffeehouse and Cafe Lena in NY, Godfrey Daniels in PA and The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and at festivals including Falcon Ridge, the South Florida Folk Festival, VT Solarfest, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He performs solo and as a duo with singer Mara Levine, and his songs have appeared in film and TV and been recorded by Barbara Kessler, Janet Feld, and Rebecca Lynch.

Shelly Peiken - Mid-Week Coffee Break Podcast

Our guest on the Mid-Week Coffee Break is Shelly Peiken.

Grammy-nominated songwriter Shelly Peiken has been a prolific, behind-the-scenes force in the music business for more than two decades. Her songs have sold in excess of 50 million records. She is best known for penning culturally resonant, female-empowerment anthems such as Christina Aguilera’s No. 1 hit, “What a Girl Wants” and Meredith Brooks’ smash, “Bitch.”

Shelly’s experiences, accomplishments and the circles in which she has traveled give her a unique perspective on the music business: that of a professional woman who fought her way into a highly competitive industry, found a way to succeed, balanced a thriving career and a family, and who has witnessed firsthand the changes that have turned that industry upside down. All the while, Shelly has stayed true to her first true love: the often elusive but always immensely satisfying act of writing a great song.

Shelly’s book, Confessions Of A Serial Songwriter is a humorous pop culture memoir about her journey: from young girl falling under the spell of magical songs to working professional, writing hits of her own. It’s about growing up, the creative process, the highs and the lows, the conflicts that arise between motherhood and career success, the divas, the celebrity egos and schemers but, most of all, the remarkable people she’s found along the way.

Gabrielle Louise - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast is singer/songwriter Gabrielle Louise. Gabrielle is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics and lush voice. The daughter of two vagabond musicians, Gabrielle inherited the genetic predisposition to wanderlust and song. Gabrielle Louise's music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Eva Cassidy. Unafraid to take a random musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. Gabrielle's music has been best appreciated in listening atmospheres with introspective, attentive crowds. She is striving to communicate more soul than special effect and gently entice her listener to release their grip on the status quo. Known for her authenticity and candor on stage, her performances are notably present and sincere, a professional presentation of her private creative world. Gabrielle has been entrusted to open for or shared the stage with greats such as Richie Havens, Patty Larkin, Eliza Gilkyson, and Guy Clark. In the original songwriting realm, she has independently released a handful of records, the most recent of which are Cigarettes for Sentiments (2008), Mirror the Branches (2010), and most recently, The Bird in My Chest (2014).  Her most recent collection of songs was released in tandem with a book of poetry and short stories. It comes in an original, handmade case that holds a the book as well as the record itself, which features the beautiful black and white photography of Kristen Hatgi-Sink and Mark Sink. "The Bird in My Chest" is an intimate, self-exposing love record. The prose that accompanies it was written at the same time as the music, and provides deeper insight into the songs, as well as Gabrielle's personality and her life on the road as a traveling troubadour.

Walter Parks - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast is veteran blues and jazz guitarist, Walter Parks. Walter has built an international career as the lead guitarist for Woodstock legend Richie Havens, as half of the folk-duo The Nudes, and as leader of the neo-southern rock group Swamp Cabbage. Inspired by the sultry gospel music of storefront churches and roadhouses in the American southeast, Walter’s raspy vocals and heartfelt lyrics explore the depths of the human spirit. We spoke with Walter in our Albuquerque studios.

Blake Morgan - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast is songwriter / artist / producer / label owner, Blake Morgan.

Born and raised in New York City, singer / songwriter / music producer / label owner Blake Morgan began playing the piano and going to music school at age five, with the aim of becoming a professional pianist. At age six his interest began to switch from classical composers such as Mozart and Bartók to The Beatles, after his mother introduced him to Meet The Beatles. Blake's first gig was at CBGB's in New York, when older students from his school recruited him to play in their band. Since he was legally too young for the venue, they smuggled him inside the club in a bass drum case. As the show began, Morgan came out of the case to jump on stage and play the keyboards.

Mindy Dillard - Mid-Week Coffee Break

Our guest on the Mid-Week Coffee Break is Mindy Dillard.

Mindy Dillard is an adventurer and an award-winning singer-songwriter. She plays clawhammer banjo and rhythm guitar, often in alternate tunings to accompany her electric and raw, crystal-clear voice. Her music pulsates with funky rhythmic grooves and sparkles with heartfelt storytelling. Mindy is a mythological scholar and has performed her one woman folk rock opera based on Grimm’s fairytales and the work of Clarissa Pinkola Estes internationally. In June 2015 she won Susanne Millsaps performing songwriter competition in Salt Lake City, Utah (which is also her hometown). She opened for folk icon John Gorka at the 2015 Utah Arts Festival. Mindy’s musical influences include Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams, Cosy Sheridan, Stephen Sondheim and Ella Fitzgerald. A genre bender, Mindy’s sound holds shades of old-time Appalachia, contemporary folk, gospel, musical theatre and rhythm and blues. Through her music she seeks to transform the ordinary into the magical and poison into medicine.

She’s recently released her second full length feature album, How to Survive a Poison Apple, a folk rock song cycle and the soundtrack for her revisionist fairy tale one-woman show, which explores her journey to finding her own voice and healthy body image. She’s performed her show at festivals, conferences and eating disorder treatment centers since 2011, including the Santa Cruz and Vancouver (B.C) fringe festivals, and the iaedp (International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals) symposium.

Glenn Frey Tribute - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast is the late Glenn Frey.

All of us at Art of the Song are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Eagles founding member Glenn Frey on January 18, 2016. An inspiration to a generation of musicians and millions of fans, he helped to define the genre of country rock.  A member of the rock ’n’ roll hall of fame and a winner of six grammy awards, Glenn Frey will truly be missed.

We take this opportunity to revisit our interview with Glenn from 2012, prior to the release of After Hours, his album of pop standards. We spoke with him about this new project, his creative process, and, he told us a great story about how he and Jackson Browne wrote Take It Easy.

This was truly a high point in our careers as interviewers, as we were able to sit down and have a relaxed conversation with Glenn at the Southern California Public Radio studios in Pasadena.

Melissa Monforti - Mid-Week Coffee Break

Our guest on the Mid-Week Coffee Break is Melissa Monforti.

Coffee with a friend.  We were discussing her newly published book and my desire to finally record after 15 years of writing songs, when in the course of the stimulating conversation, an idea came to me.  Why not blog about the process?

I hang on every word when performing artists speak about their creative process, or even what they had for lunch, both on stage and in interviews.  Writing about the recording process, how I write songs, and what I think about the big deep world - that's part of what I do now and I love it.

I also love the conversations that are popping up on the blog and beyond.  I feel content being part of a bigger discussion exploring creativity.  Perhaps you'd like to grab glass of wine and step into my brain for a minute.  You can read the blog at www.melissamonforti.com.

My music might be described as contemplative folk music.  I hope you'll enjoy a listen.

Doug Balmain - Mid-Week Coffee Break

Our guest on the Mid-Week Coffee Break is Doug Balmain. A rock ’n’ roller with the voice of a soul man, Balmain’s lyrics and vocals have all the power & tenacity of a man desperately fighting for what’s his while maintaining the honesty and sentimentality of a true storyteller. Rachelle Lacy of the Billings Gazette described his work by saying, “Balmain’s voice and guitar are extraordinary, and his songwriting ability is a super-power.”

Doug's musical diversity and eclectic range of influences are brought to light through his guitar work - which can echo with a haunting, acoustic sparseness reminiscent of the pre-war delta - flow with a rich, melodic voicing that’ll leave you thinking you've just heard The Edge and John Mayer’s unborn love-child caressing the fret board…while at other times it stabs through the heart of the song with a violent, electric wail evocative of an agitated, “Let it Bleed” era Keith Richards.

Not one to candy-coat his words, Balmain’s writing confronts life experience with an unyielding stare and attention to detail. “His is a very unique sound with stories that capture life from a different point of view,” said Marcus Walton - editor of L.A. based Music Arts Magazine. Having no formal knowledge of music, Doug relies on visceral instinct and his hemorrhaging vehemence to form his songs' compositions.

After being asked what kind of music he plays, Balmain responds by saying, “I play rock ’n’ roll with soul in its veins.”

Beth Hart - Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast

Our guest this week on the Art of the Song Coffeehouse Podcast is Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Beth Hart. She is a chart-topping hit-maker, collaborator with guitar legend, Joe Bonamassa, and performer to sold out audiences across the US and Europe. In spite of her success, Beth has been dealing with demons that have pursued her for her whole life: the tragic death of a sister, and her own battle with drugs, booze, bad relationships, and a diagnosis with bi-polar disorder.

Perhaps it has been coming to terms with these challenges that has elevated her music to a new level. Beth Hart’s recent release, Better Than Home, is by many accounts her best work to date. It goes to the depth of her soul, revealing past pain, family issues and personal demons as well as her coming to grips with them and using that knowledge to find the real beauty in her life.

John Dillon - Using Intention to Start a Creative Project

This week on the Creativity Corner we welcome author of The 20-20 Creativity Solution, John Dillon.

John is a singer-songwriter, performer and guitar maker. Along with his wife, noted actor Vivian Nesbitt, John launched The Standing 'O' Project as a way to overcome what he sees as one of the biggest inequities in the music business: despite being talented creative professionals with a profound work ethic, singer/songwriters are often shortchanged professionally. John and Viv are intimately familiar with the challenges of the itinerant singer/songwriter lifestyle: they used to tour the country in a green van, playing original music in bars, coffee houses and other roadside venues.

The Standing "O" Project helps keep Art of the Song on the air. You're invited to find good, new, non-commercial music in a venue that lets musicians have an actual revenue stream. Come and connect with artists on a whole new level. Support musicians with an unheard of 50/50 split of proceeds. And gain access to rare music, video and interview content. You can be part of this revolutionary community and matter to the music at www.standingoproject.com #sociallyresponsiblestreaming
